What to expect from your first week as a university student at UC Sheffield

Meet your HE Tutorial Mentor

Did you know that our university level students have access to their own specialist HE Tutorial Mentor? Their job is to support you with the academic demands of your course, so whether you’re anxious about mastering the academic writing style, getting to grips with referencing or just need a bit more support understanding the concepts you’ve been learning in class, your Tutorial Mentor is here to help!

Make sure you’ve got the support you need

We want to make sure that you have the support you need to flourish in your studies, so make sure that you apply for any financial or pastoral support during your first week, if you didn’t already do so at enrolment.

Our HE Student Support Fund can be used to support you with living costs, travel expenses, resources for your course (e.g. books or specialist equipment) and even trips and residential programmes associated with your qualification.

If you have a disability, learning difficulty or long-term health condition then you may be entitled to support through the Disabled Students’ Allowance to remove certain barriers to your education. This might include specialist equipment, travel costs, deadline extensions or even a one-to-one Mentor to support you during your studies.

Get to grips with your classes

One of the main features of your HE induction week will be meeting your fellow classmates and tutors. It’s an exciting time to meet the tutors who will be imparting their industry knowledge and expertise on you, as well as making new like-minded friends.

During your first week you’ll also receive your timetable and reading lists for your various modules so that you can start swotting up on the subject you’re about to specialise in!

Access your student discounts

Surely one of the most exciting parts of becoming a uni student is getting access to all those amazing discounts. As soon as you’ve set up your student email address, you’ll be able to register for an NUS Totum card so that you can take advantage of deals with hundreds of different brands. You can usually pick up your NUS Totum card from our Students’ Union Office in Student Central within a few days of ordering it.

You won’t want to miss our Freshers’ Fair either! Held on Thursday 19th September, our Freshers’ Fair will include free food and drinks from Sheffield-based street-food vendors, live music, freebies and giveaways from loads of local businesses, plus games and activities for you to try.
