Disabled Students' Allowances

If you have a disability that affects your ability to study, you could be eligible for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) to help overcome cost barriers to your education.

Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) enables learners with disabilities and long-term health conditions to access support in a variety of ways, tailored to their needs in order to give them the best support possible.

About Disabled Students' Allowances

Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) are designed to help with extra costs you may face as a direct result of studying with a disability, a long-term illness, a mental health condition, a specific learning difficulty like dyslexia or an autistic spectrum condition such as Asperger's syndrome.

At present, DASs are only available for students studying on higher education/university level courses.

DSAs are not means-tested, so yours or your parents' income will not be taken into account. Getting DSAs will not affect any other benefits you receive.

You can use DSAs to support you with things like specialist equipment, travel costs or non-medical helpers.

Disabled Students' Allowances Applications

In order to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) you must satisfy all three requirements below:

Proof of disability

You must provide evidence of your disability or long-term health condition, such as a doctor's letter, diagnostic assessment or completed medical evidence form (ask our DSA Coordinator for a blank copy, or download one by clicking here).

Nationality

You must be a UK student.

Course requirements

You must be one of the following:

  • a full-time undergraduate student on a course lasting at least 1 year

  • a part-time undergraduate student whose course lasts at least 1 year (and doesn’t take more than four times as long to complete as the equivalent full time course)

  • a postgraduate student studying a recognised taught or research course
