UC Sheffield healthcare tutors named Social Prescribing Champions

Earlier this month, two of UC Sheffield's tutors were names as Social Prescribing Champions by the National Academy for Social Prescribing.

Sam Wilby and Lesley Allen, who teach on the Assistant Practitioner foundation degree and apprenticeship programmes, have been recognised for their work in championing the role of social prescribing, raising awareness and promoting the work of NASP with their students.

What is social prescribing?

Social prescribing is a way to link people with activities and support in their local community. This approach aims to help with the practical, social, and emotional aspects that impact overall health. Social prescribing takes a comprehensive view of health, focusing on what matters to each individual. It also aims to reduce health inequalities by using resources within the community and empowering people to be actively involved in their own care.

How do we implement social prescribing at UC Sheffield?

Here at UC Sheffield, we are activity Social Prescribers who undertake lengthy conversations with learners to direct them to the correct support they require.

We also undertake a Health Promotion event (hosted at our Hillsborough Campus) that enables learners and staff to interact with current, reliable health information. It also enables us to bring awareness to some more uncommon health topics (e.g. Female Genital Mutilation), which need addressing, making them more publicly accessible.
