5 simple ways to stay safe online according to our expert cyber security tutors

Being online is part of everyday life. We use the internet to study, work, shop, and stay in touch with friends and family. As the internet becomes more central to our lives, it is important to understand how to protect yourself.

To mark Safer Internet Day, I want to share five simple, practical ways anyone can stay safer online. You don't need to be a cyber security expert to follow these tips, but a little awareness can make a big difference.

1. Protect your passwords

Your passwords are often the first line of defence. A strong password should:

  • Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Include numbers and symbols
  • Avoid names, birthdays, or common words
  • Be unique for each account

One useful technique is using a passphrase. This is a short sentence that is easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. A few unrelated words strung together can be more secure than a single complex word.

If remembering lots of passwords feels overwhelming, a password manager can help you store them safely.

Strong passwords mean stronger protection.

2. Think before you click

Many online scams rely on rushing you into acting without thinking. Before clicking a link or opening an attachment:

  • Check the sender’s email address carefully
  • Look out for spelling or grammar mistakes
  • Be cautious of messages that sound urgent or threatening
  • Avoid downloading unexpected attachments

If something does not feel right, pause and double check. If you are unsure, ask for help, especially in a workplace or college setting.

Stop. Check. Think. Then click.

3. Privacy is power

Every time you share something online, you are giving away a little bit of personal information. To stay in control:

  • Share less personal detail where possible
  • Review your privacy settings on social media and apps
  • Turn off location sharing when it is not needed
  • Think carefully before posting photos or personal updates

Once something is online, it can be very difficult to remove completely.

What you protect today protects you tomorrow.

4. Be careful on public Wi-Fi

Free public Wi-Fi can be convenient, but it is not always secure. When using public networks:

  • Avoid online banking or private logins
  • Log out of accounts when you are finished
  • Turn off auto connect to Wi-Fi networks
  • Use a VPN if you have one available

Public Wi-Fi is public. Treat it with caution.

5. Be kind and report harm

Staying safe online is not just about technology. It is also about how we treat each other.

  • Cyberbullying is real and harmful
  • Treat others with respect online
  • Report abusive or unsafe content when you see it
  • Support friends who may need help

A safer internet depends on all of us.
